A cornerstone of faith. That’s Bethel Baptist Church. Right here on Bergen Street in Brooklyn. For over a century its walls have witnessed countless joys and sorrows. Bethel Baptist Church a beacon of hope for the African American community. It stands as a testament to perseverance and faith.

Founded in 1906 by Reverend Timothy White. Bethel began as a small mission. A prayer group of just fifteen souls. Their devotion and the Reverend’s tireless work led to explosive growth. They outgrew their initial space.

In 1914 they broke ground for a new church home. This wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was an act of faith. Reverend White had faith in God and confidence in his congregation. With the lots paid for the basement was erected in 1915. The church continued to grow. Soon they needed more space. An adjoining lot was purchased in 1924. By 1920 the mortgage was paid off. They built a magnificent two-story building. A testament to their collective effort.

Bethel wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a community center. Under Reverend White’s leadership. They established a day nursery a doctor’s clinic and reading rooms. Bethel actively participated in community development projects. Reverend White led the congregation for nearly four decades. Until his passing in 1943.

Reverend Luther T Chapman became the second pastor. He had joined Bethel in 1917 under Reverend White. He served seventeen years as Sunday School superintendent. He oversaw the completion of many projects already underway. The church continued its impressive growth during his tenure.

Reverend Paul T Pruden served as interim pastor. He faced challenges but held Bethel together. He emphasized unity during a period of transition. His words echoed with faith and resilience. “We can’t disunite now. By the Grace of God we must hold Bethel together.”

Reverend Dr Willie James Hall became pastor in 1961. He championed Civil Rights. His leadership brought the congregation into the forefront of the movement. They became strong supporters of justice and equality. He oversaw extensive improvements and renovations to the church.

Reverend Dr H DeVore Chapman the grandnephew of Reverend Luther T Chapman. He became pastor in 2005. He continued the church’s beautification process. The addition of new pews and doors. He also oversaw the purchase of a new van. He sadly passed away in 2012. His vision for expansion continues.

Bethel Baptist Church a vibrant testament to faith community and resilience. It’s a place where history echoes in every hymn sung and prayer offered. A place of hope and renewal.
