Quanzhou

Beneath the gaze of towering peaks, lies Quanzhou, the largest county in Guilin. Quanzhou isn’t just large in area. It also holds the distinction of being the most populous county in the region. The story of Quanzhou is a tale of two provinces. Originally part of Hunan province, Quanzhou transitioned to Guangxi after the Ming Dynasty, adding another layer to its rich history. This shift in provincial lines also influenced its linguistic landscape. The Xiang Chinese dialect, a testament to its Hunan roots, is still spoken here. Quanzhou is a place where languages intertwine, a microcosm of China’s diverse linguistic tapestry. Within its borders, four distinct Yao languages echo through the valleys. Mien, Kim Mun, Ao Min, and Biao Min are spoken by the Yao people, adding to the symphony of languages. Biao Min itself branches into five unique dialect groups. These are Qingshui, Baizhu, Bailing, Gumu, and Xieshui. These dialects paint a vibrant picture of cultural exchange and evolution. The Yao people, primarily residing in Jiaojiang and Dongshan Yao Ethnic Townships, are the keepers of these linguistic treasures. Dongshan boasts the largest Yao population in Quanzhou, a community of around 20,000 people. Jiaojiang, with its smaller yet significant Yao population, offers a glimpse into a close-knit community. Banyaoshan Village, nestled within Jiaojiang, houses a small group of Yao families, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the mountains. Even beyond the designated ethnic townships, the Yao presence is felt. Shaoshui town and its Tongyou Village are home to a vibrant Yao community, their traditions adding to Quanzhou’s diverse cultural fabric. High in the mountains, the Heavenly Reservoir shimmers, a mirror reflecting the sky. This reservoir, part of the Heavenly Lake Hydro-power Station, boasts the highest water source in Asia, a remarkable feat of engineering. From its linguistic diversity to its mountainous landscapes, Quanzhou offers a journey into the heart of rural China.
