Why was the Old Chemistry Building built? It stands as a testament to a time of growth and ambition in Kuala Lumpur’s academic landscape. This Renaissance-style structure wasn’t always surrounded by modern buildings. It was a pioneering establishment on campus.

The Old Chemistry Building’s story began when construction started. The building was completed in 1911 after the Old Arts building was finished. P. Eagle designed it. His style was greatly influenced by the Herbert Baker School of Architecture.

Initially, it cost about £13,500 to construct the Old Chemistry Building. It housed the Chemistry and Physical Science departments. In 1921, the Zoology Department briefly joined them.

In 1971, progress reshaped the Old Chemistry Building. Its southern wing was removed. This made space for a library. Now, only a single arch remains as a reminder of what once was.

Despite the changes, the Old Chemistry Building remains a landmark. Today, it houses the Quality Assurance Unit. You can also find a campus kiosk and photocopying facilities here.

The Old Chemistry Building stands as a reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s evolution. It shows the changing needs of education. It reflects the blend of history and modernity. This building has witnessed countless students pass through its halls. It has seen academic pursuits shape the minds of future generations.

Imagine the experiments conducted within these walls. Picture the eager students learning the secrets of chemistry. Think about the dedicated professors shaping their understanding. The Old Chemistry Building isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a container of knowledge and memories. It’s a symbol of academic excellence in Kuala Lumpur. Its walls echo the voices of those who sought to understand the world through science.
