Five hundred and fifty-five beds. That’s a lot of stories. Welcome to the KRH Klinikum Siloah. Right here in Hanover’s Linden-Süd district stands a place steeped in history. It wasn’t always this impressive modern structure.

The KRH Klinikum Siloah’s roots go back further than you might think. It began humbly. A small clinic opened in 1896. It was more of a visiting nurse service than a hospital. Patients received care at home thanks to nurses from the Henriettenstift.

As healthcare demands grew the Diakonissenstation Siloah was inaugurated in 1899. It had only ten beds. The city of Linden expanded it to twenty beds by 1900. It was a far cry from the expansive facility we see today.

Linden’s growth fueled the need for a bigger hospital. A new building was constructed. Opening in 1909 it boasted seventy beds. The city of Linden took over the hospital in 1913. It added several departments specializing in ophthalmology gynecology ENT urology and neurology.

World War I and II greatly impacted the hospital. World War II brought significant damage from air raids. The hospital faced challenges. Post-war rebuilding was crucial.

A new building opened in 1957 housing internal medicine and surgery. The bed count reached 434. Another expansion from 1966 to 1969 added a surgical clinic central services and more. In 1970 Siloah became an academic teaching hospital affiliated with the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover MHH.

The hospital’s name has evolved. For a brief period after merging with the KRH Klinikum Oststadt-Heidehaus in 2014 it was called KRH Klinikum Siloah-Oststadt-Heidehaus. But by 2016 the original name was back. It reflects the hospital’s enduring legacy.

This remarkable institution wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. Dr Curt Roesebeck was its first medical director. He led the hospital until 1936. A street near the old building bears his name. The KRH Klinikum Siloah is more than just a hospital. It is a place where lives have been saved and where countless stories of healing and resilience have unfolded over the years.
