华南农业大学, or SCAU, is where this building is located. SCAU has a rich history dating back to 1909. It began as Guangdong province’s agricultural experiment station and Affiliated Institute of Agriculture. This initial step marked the start of agricultural education.
By 1917, it evolved into Guangdong Province Public Agricultural School. It began offering a four-year degree in agriculture. This was a crucial step in formalizing agricultural studies. In 1924, it was incorporated into Guangdong University as the College of Agriculture. Then, in 1926, it was renamed the College of Agriculture, National Sun Yat-sen University.
A significant development occurred in 1931. Sun Yat-sen University started building a new campus in Shipai. The university received about 3.5 square kilometers of land. The College of Agriculture began to develop rapidly here.
The year 1952 was transformative. Nationwide readjustments of university resources took place. The South China Agricultural College was established. This was achieved by unifying agricultural schools and departments. These came from universities in Southern China, including the former National Sun Yat-sen University, Lingnan University, and Guangxi University.
In 1979, it earned recognition as one of the National Key Universities. The university was officially renamed South China Agricultural University in 1984. In 2000, administration shifted to Guangdong Province. This occurred during higher learning institution management system reforms. By 2015, it was selected as a Cultivated High-level University of Guangdong Province. Then, in 2022, it became one of the Double First-Class Universities.
SCAU boasts 26 colleges and departments. It provides a wide range of academic options. There are 95 undergraduate programs, 107 master’s degree programs, and 60 Ph.D. programs. SCAU also offers nine professional master’s degrees and a professional doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
SCAU has many international partnerships. It has ties with twenty-three universities from thirteen countries. These are in Europe, America, Asia, and Oceania. Academic exchanges are common between SCAU and universities in Hong Kong and Macao. The UNDP, FAO, and WFC value SCAU’s role in agricultural technology exchanges. They established the Regional Sericulture Training Center for Asia and Pacific and the China International Center for Agricultural Training in SCAU. The university has trained about 1000 overseas students. These students and officials come from over 50 countries.
