In the bustling heart of George Town, Chennai, stands the majestic Mamoor Mosque. A silent sentinel amidst the vibrant chaos, the Mamoor Mosque whispers tales of centuries past. The Mamoor Mosque was originally built in the 18th century. Later, it was rebuilt in granite by the Nawab of Carnatic, Muhammad Ali Wallajah, who reigned from 1749 to 1795. This reconstruction took place during the 19th century. Interestingly, the Nawab also commissioned the Wallajah Mosque in Triplicane, designing both mosques with a similar architectural style. The chronogram within the Mamoor Mosque, a testament to its history, was crafted by the esteemed Nuruddin Khan Muhammed Bahdur, also known as Dil. Located on Angappan Street, the Mamoor Mosque stretches magnificently, occupying the entire block between Angappa Naicken Street and Linghi Chetty Street. Its grandeur has earned it the local moniker, “Big Mosque.” This mosque holds a special place in the hearts of Chennai’s Muslim community, a beacon of faith and tradition. Over the years, the Mamoor Mosque has undergone several renovations, ensuring its continued presence and significance in the vibrant tapestry of Chennai.
