“A bath for ten pfennig?” a woman’s voice echoed across the bustling Merianplatz. “Don’t mind if I do!” It’s 1895, and the Merianbad is the place to be. Imagine the scene: horses and carts clattering past, the air thick with the smells of baking bread and coal smoke. Right here, where this charming café now stands, once stood Frankfurt’s first public bathhouse, the Merianbad. This octagonal gem, opened in 1887, was a gift from the banker Theodor Stern to the rapidly growing Nordend neighborhood. Back then, private baths were a luxury few could afford. The Merianbad offered a much-needed service, a chance for everyone to enjoy a refreshing shower for a mere ten pfennig. Inspired by a design from Berlin physician Oskar Lassar, the Merianbad was a marvel of its time. Fourteen shower stalls – four for women, ten for men – were arranged around a central heating kettle. Above, a lantern housed a warm water reservoir, ensuring a steady supply of hot showers. The Merianbad quickly became a vital part of the community. Between 150 and 200 people visited daily, nearly 46,000 in 1895 alone! Even as late as 1981, the Merianbad still saw 61,000 visitors a year. Eventually, as private bathrooms became more common, the number of visitors dwindled. By 2000, only about forty people a month used the public showers. In the early 2000s, the Merianbad closed its doors as a bathhouse. However, this historic building, protected as a landmark, found new life as the café you see today. It opened in 2005, with the city requiring the new owners to maintain public showers. Seven shower stalls remain, a quiet echo of the Merianbad’s bustling past. While rarely used, they stand as a testament to a time when this octagonal building offered a simple luxury to all. So next time you enjoy a coffee here, remember the echoes of splashing water and the satisfied sighs of those who found comfort and cleanliness within the walls of the Merianbad.
