Founded in 1879 the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Rev James Harvey Makey a member of Antioch Baptist Church started it all. He gathered neighbors in his home. He sought guidance from Rev John Henry “Jack” Yates Antioch’s pastor. A small frame church was built in 1884 by Rev Makey and Deacon Clarence Young. The Makeys served the congregation for years. Other early leaders were Brother Henry Thomas Deacon Joe McConico David Thompson and Willie Hogan. Spring revivals and Easter baptisms in Buffalo Bayou were traditions. In 1917 the church bought this land for a new sanctuary.
Rev Joseph Patience Churchwell became pastor in 1928. He served until 1957. Under his leadership many programs flourished. These included evangelism twelve Mission Circles a men’s chorus and a youth council. His wife and daughter actively supported the church’s work. A new sanctuary was built in 1954.
Rev David Leon Everett II became pastor in 1957. He served until 1990. The church grew significantly reaching over 1500 members. He led community outreach and involvement in Baptist networks.
The Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church continues its legacy. It actively participates in community life. From its humble beginnings in a home it has grown into a vital part of Houston’s Third Ward.
