A cornerstone of faith. That’s what Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Houston truly is. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to unwavering faith and community resilience.
See this majestic structure before you? It wasn’t always this grand. Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church’s history is a fascinating journey. It all began late in 1841. Then Bishop Odin founded the first Catholic Church in Houston. He named it after the founder of his order St Vincent de Paul. Sadly that original church was lost to fires and storms.
But the spirit of St Vincent de Paul endured. In 1939 Bishop Christopher Byrne re-established the parish. Construction started in 1940 under the guidance of Father Michael Leahy. Father Leahy celebrated the very first Mass in the newly built church. He retired soon after due to illness. Father John D Connolly became the second pastor. He rapidly expanded the church. He opened a school in 1940. He also established the Girl and Boy Scout units. The Legion of Mary was organized as well. By 1948 a large two-story school building was completed. The men of the parish built a Boy Scout House. They used donated materials.
In 1950 the parish acquired five more acres of land. This was thanks to the help of St Jude. This act inspired a deep devotion to St Jude. The parish now holds a yearly novena a weekly Mass and even a chapel dedicated to St Jude. A new church was built. The first Mass was held on Christmas Day 1953. A new rectory came in 1956. A gymnasium cafeteria and more school buildings were constructed in 1958.
The church has seen many pastors. Each one left their mark. Monsignor James Jamail oversaw massive construction projects. He also updated and renovated the campus. His work culminated in the stunning restoration of the church itself. Father John Weyer fostered devotion to Divine Mercy and the Blessed Sacrament. Our current pastor Monsignor Bill Young has overseen more modernization efforts. He has worked to make the church fully ADA compliant. He championed the construction of the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel. Most recently he oversaw the building of a new educational facility. This new building was dedicated by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo in 2024.
