The Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana plays a vital role. It prepares young men for priesthood within the Archdiocese of Tijuana. The “Semana del Seminario” promotes the Seminario. They visit schools and media outlets. They aim to inspire young men toward religious life.
Every Catholic priest’s foundation lies in seminary training. The Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana offers a space and time. Young men explore their calling. Currently the Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana has many students. The Seminario Mayor has students studying Philosophy and Theology. The Seminario Menor also has students studying at preparatory level. Both campuses have official recognition from the Public Education Secretariat. The Seminario seeks to share its message. It wants young men to understand the life of a seminarian. The Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana celebrated its 70th anniversary. The celebration included a thanksgiving mass. It took place at the Seminario Menor. Archbishop Rafael Romo Muñoz presided over it. Rector Eduardo Ortiz Alonso and other leaders participated. All the seminarians joined in the festivities.
In its history, the Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana has undergone changes. It mirrors the evolution of the Church in Baja California. Msgr. Felipe Torres Hurtado founded it. He began the Seminario Misional de Ntra. Sra. de la Paz in Ensenada in 1940.
The Seminario faced closure. The governor ordered it shut down. However, its founder reopened it. In 1946, the Seminario moved to Tijuana. It is now located on Calle Décima and Ocampo.
Later, the diocese entrusted the Seminario to the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. Rectors like Joaquín Madrigal and Ángel Mota led the institution. In 1955, they inaugurated the Seminario Mayor. It was situated on Cerro Colorado’s slope. The missionaries shaped future dioceses of Tijuana and Mexicali.
In 1964, the Diocese of Tijuana formed. The Seminario took its current name: Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana. Various rectors have served including Francisco Javier Esparza and José Eduardo Ortiz Alonso.
The Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana has seen guidance from bishops. Msgr. Alfredo Galindo Mendoza fostered a family environment. Msgr. Juan Jesús Posadas strengthened the Seminario’s organization. Msgr. Emilio Berlié Belaunzarán integrated students from other areas. Msgr. Rafael Romo Muñoz focuses on comprehensive seminarian formation.
Significant changes have occurred. The Seminario Menor was established. The institution’s facilities underwent renovations. The Seminario’s history is linked to the churches of Baja California. It is considered the city’s oldest higher education institution. It is a vital source for our presbytery. The Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana reflects the Church’s efforts. It helps to modernize the training.
In 2022, the Seminario Diocesano de Tijuana had students. All students were men. That year, the institution had graduates. All the graduates were men. The most common field of study was Arts and Humanities.
