In 1881, a small group gathered in Lakewood. They met in Joseph B. Wright’s farmhouse parlor. Lakewood was primarily farmland then. Less than 100 houses dotted the landscape between Denver and Golden. This group, the Union Sunday School, laid the foundation for what would become Lakewood First United Methodist Church. Lakewood First United Methodist Church has a rich history. It was the first church in Lakewood. For many years, it was the only Protestant church in the area. The congregation moved from Wright’s parlor to the Lakewood Schoolhouse, then to a store. In 1902, the Robb family donated land at Colfax and Allison. This land housed the first Lakewood Methodist Episcopal Church building. By 1904, the congregation had a debt-free building. The church expanded in 1923 with an additional room. Modern amenities arrived later. Running water was installed in 1924 and electricity in 1926. After World War II, the original Colfax structure was moved to West 13th Avenue and Simms Street. Lakewood First United Methodist Church continued to grow. In 1950, a new building was constructed at 14th and Brentwood. This building was later designated as the chapel. A new sanctuary was built in 1961. An education wing followed in 1962. Lakewood First United Methodist Church has been serving the community for over 80 years. It welcomes all people to join in fellowship and make disciples for Jesus Christ. The church strives to strengthen Christians in their spiritual growth. It provides social outreach to the community and the world. Lakewood First United Methodist Church is more than just a building. It’s the people dedicated to mission and ministry, making a difference in the world.
