Opened on August 2 2004 the Faliro Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre stands before us. It opened just weeks before the Athens Olympics. Test events occurred here a year prior. Feel the energy of the games.
The Faliro Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre hosted heated beach volleyball matches. The 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens saw incredible feats here. This stadium is part of the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex. It held nearly 10000 people. Public seating was capped at 7300 during the Olympics.
Imagine the crowds roaring. Picture the sand flying as athletes dove for impossible saves. Can you hear the ref’s whistle? The Faliro Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre saw intense competition.
Beach volleyball’s history stretches back to the 1920s. Some say it started in Hawaii. Most say Santa Monica California is where it began. Families played 6 vs 6. The first two-man game was in Santa Monica in the 1930s.
The sport crossed the Atlantic in 1927. It became popular at a nudist camp near Paris. Imagine that. By the 1930s beach volleyball spread through Europe. It reached Bulgaria Czechoslovakia and Latvia.
The first official two-man tournament was in 1947. It took place at Will Rogers State Beach California. No prize money was awarded. The first prize appeared in 1948 a case of Pepsi.
The sport evolved into an entertainment show. Beauty contests became part of the program. In 1957 Greta Tyson a star was crowned Queen of the Beach. Beach volleyball was more than just a sport.
The California Beach Volleyball Association formed in 1965. They coordinated schedules and defined the game’s rules. Commercial sponsorships began to grow. Winston Cigarettes sponsored a tournament in 1975.
The Association of Volleyball Professionals AVP formed in 1983. It protected players’ interests. It preserved beach volleyball’s integrity. The Women’s Professional Volleyball Association WPVA followed in 1986.
Beach volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1993. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics featured it. Karch Kiraly won gold. He became the first indoor and outdoor Olympic champion in volleyball.
The Faliro Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre became a key venue. It hosted the 2004 Olympic beach volleyball competition. The stadium pulsed with excitement. The world watched the games unfold here.
Sadly by 2014 the venue fell into disuse. Plants overgrown. It was abandoned. In 2016 the Hellenic Parliament transferred the centre. It went to the Ministry of Justice. A courtroom was proposed.
The Faliro Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre’s future is uncertain. Its Olympic legacy remains. The echoes of cheering crowds linger here. It stands as a testament to athletic achievement.
