Have you ever felt the pulse of Hollywood history? Right here before you stands the Capitol Records Building a 13-story testament to music’s golden age. This iconic tower isn’t just a building it’s a time capsule. Its circular design a bold departure for 1956 was actually a happy accident. Architect Louis Naidorf designed it first without even knowing who the client was. Capitol Records initially wanted a rectangular building. Their lender convinced them otherwise. The round design was thought to be more eye-catching boosting rental potential.

The Capitol Records Building is more than just an architectural marvel. It’s the heart of Capitol Studios where legends like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole laid down timeless tracks. Sinatra’s beloved Georg Neumann U 47 microphone still resides there a microphone he carried everywhere. The building itself is nicknamed “The House That Nat Built” a tribute to Cole’s immense contribution to Capitol Records’ success. The first album recorded here was Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems of Color.

Look closely. Notice the distinctive curved awnings. The tall spire? It’s said to resemble a stack of records on a turntable the spindle pointing skyward. That was unintentional. But the blinking red light on top is very intentional. It spells out “Hollywood” in Morse code. A clever advertising idea by Capitol’s president. Leila Morse granddaughter of Samuel Morse herself flipped the switch when the building opened in 1956. In 1992 the light briefly changed to “Capitol 50” celebrating the label’s anniversary.

And then there’s the Hollywood Jazz Mural. Artist Richard Wyatt Jr’s masterpiece adorns the south wall. Restored in 2011 the vibrant ceramic tiles depict jazz giants like Ella Fitzgerald Miles Davis and Nat King Cole. Their names and others are etched into the stone background too.

This isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant piece of Los Angeles history a stage for musical legends a testament to the power of music and creativity. The Capitol Records Building isn’t just a landmark. It’s a living legend. And you’re standing right in its presence.
