Whole Truth Church of God

Founded in March 1957 the Whole Truth Church of God in Christ began its journey on Beaubien Street. Elder Lemuel Austin answered a divine calling. He started the church with his family and a few devoted members. Within a month twenty-five people joined. This included a church mother and four deacons. The congregation quickly outgrew its initial space. In October 1957 they purchased a building at 721 Clairpointe Street. The church thrived. It expanded twice to accommodate the growing number of parishioners. They reached one hundred and fifty members. The city’s Urban Renewal Project forced a move. In June 1976 the church relocated to its current location at 3997 Humboldt Street. They purchased the property from Messiah Baptist Church. Tragedy struck in May 1986. Founder Lemuel Austin passed away. Elder Ernie McCutchen Sr took over. He was appointed by Bishop P.A Brooks. Pastor McCutchen continued the church’s growth. By June 1991 the sanctuary had deteriorated. Services moved to the annex building’s upstairs auditorium. It became known as The Upper Room. The congregation continued to grow. A new sanctuary was needed. Plans were approved in October 1991. Construction began in April 1993. The old sanctuary was demolished. A new church building was erected on the same site. In January 1995 the congregation held its first service in the new edifice. The Whole Truth Church of God in Christ continues to serve its community. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring power of spiritual community. The church remains a vital part of Detroit’s landscape. It reflects the unwavering faith of its members. Its history is a powerful story of growth adaptation and unwavering dedication to God.
