Perched atop this hill, the Borussia Statue commands attention. The Borussia Statue isn’t just a statue. It’s a symbol, a powerful representation of Prussia. Borussia, the Latin word for Prussia, takes the form of a majestic female figure. This particular Borussia Statue is a copy, meticulously crafted in 1981 from Thuringian limestone. The original, made of sandstone, fell victim to vandalism. The replica stands proudly on a two-tiered terrace, offering stunning views of the Großer Wannsee. The terrace itself, designed by Ernst Sputh around 1880, reflects the elegance of the Italian Renaissance. The Borussia Statue we see today was originally part of the garden of Villa Wild. The villa, built for lamp manufacturer Emil Wild, belonged to the Wannsee villa colony. In 1975, the western part of the garden became part of this public park. The original Borussia, created by royal court stonemasons Paul Wimmel and Paul Rasche, based on designs by Eduard and Andreas Lürssen, was placed here. The current statue, while a copy, carries the same symbolic weight. The sculptor Hans Starcke even recreated the lost bronze laurel wreath, based on old photographs. He ensured the copy mirrored the original’s color and texture. This allowed the Borussia Statue to regain its rightful place overlooking the Wannsee. The restoration, a joint effort of the district, the State Monuments Office, and the Von-Hinckeldey Foundation, was completed in 2009. This meticulous process returned the Borussia Statue to its former glory, a testament to Prussia’s enduring legacy.
