What does social consciousness look like? Here at the University of Pennsylvania, it takes the form of a powerful bronze sculpture. This is the Social Consciousness Statue, a work that has stirred both admiration and controversy since its creation in 1954.

The statue, created by the renowned sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein, depicts three figures. The central figure, the Eternal Mother, sits with a sorrowful expression, a symbol of enduring compassion. She is flanked by two standing women. One, representing Compassion, comforts a stricken youth at her feet. The other, Succor, supports a young man who reaches out to her.

Originally commissioned for the Ellen Phillips Samuel Memorial, the Social Consciousness Statue was intended to embody the American ideal of compassion. However, as Epstein’s vision took shape, it became clear that the sculpture’s sheer size wouldn’t fit the planned location. After being displayed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for decades, it found a new home here at the University of Pennsylvania in 2019. The sculpture, on long-term loan from the Association for Public Art, is a testament to the enduring power of art to spark dialogue and reflection.
