This seemingly unassuming village in Long An province holds a secret, a story of fierce resistance and hard-won victory. Xã Thanh Phú Long isn’t just a place known for its dragon fruit orchards. It’s also home to the Cù Tròn battlefield, a site of significant historical importance for the people of Long An. The name “Cù Tròn” itself is intriguing. Local legend says the area, with its intricate network of waterways and swamps, resembled a swirling top, unlike anything in the surrounding landscape. This unique topography played a crucial role in the battle that took place here on November 27, 1964. Picture this. A small group of 18 soldiers, part of C313’s Battalion 1, found themselves facing a formidable enemy force. Outnumbered and outgunned, they held their ground against tanks, warships, and even helicopter gunships. The battle raged from morning till late afternoon. The soldiers of Xã Thanh Phú Long, along with the local population, fought valiantly, repelling the enemy attacks. The battle of Cù Tròn was a pivotal moment in the region’s history. This victory, commemorated annually on October 23rd of the lunar calendar, serves as a testament to the courage and resilience of the people of Xã Thanh Phú Long. It’s a reminder of their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity and their significant contribution to the fight for independence.
