Friedrich-Schiller-Grundschule

In 1905, the doors of Mahlsdorfer Gemeindeschule swung open for the first time. It’s hard to imagine, looking at the Friedrich-Schiller-Grundschule today, that this vibrant hub of learning began with just eight classrooms. The school, nestled in Berlin-Mahlsdorf, has seen its share of transformations over the years. The original south wing housed not only eager students but also the school custodian in a cozy attic apartment. Just a few years later, in 1909, the school expanded northward, thanks to architect Paul Tarruhn. This addition included a grand aula, a mirror image of the original building, and a separate gymnasium. Friedrich-Schiller-Grundschule, named after the famed German poet in the late 1970s, even bears the scars of World War II, having served as a makeshift hospital. The post-war era brought significant changes, some for better, some for worse. Between 1960 and 1970, the school’s distinct saddle roofs were replaced with tiled hip roofs. The charming southern entrance was sadly sealed off. Later, in the 1980s, new restrooms were added, but the renovations weren’t always successful. By the late 1980s, the aula was deemed unsafe due to damaged ceiling beams, forcing its closure. The Friedrich-Schiller-Grundschule even faced the threat of demolition in the 1990s. Thankfully, a meticulous restoration saved the historic building. The original plans, lost in a fire in 1944, had to be painstakingly recreated from the few remaining photographs. This restoration returned the school to its former glory, complete with restored saddle roofs and newly added dormers. The separate restroom building was detached from the gymnasium and expanded to include modern changing rooms. Today, Friedrich-Schiller-Grundschule stands as a testament to its rich history. It continues to serve the community, providing a modern learning environment for over 400 students, while preserving its historical charm.
