Water, precious in this arid landscape, was carefully collected in chultunes, some of which you can still see today. Now, focus your attention on the majestic structure before you: the Arco de Labná. This isn’t just any archway. The Arco de Labná is a masterpiece of Puuc architecture, a style that flourished between 600 and 900 AD. Admire its intricate carvings, many remarkably preserved. Notice the masks of Chaac, the rain god, a testament to the Mayan reverence for this life-giving force. The Arco de Labná isn’t an entrance to the city. Instead, it’s a passageway, a symbolic bridge between public spaces. It stands as a proud declaration of Mayan ingenuity, connecting El Palacio and other key sites via sacbes, or ceremonial roads. This arch measures an impressive 3 meters wide and 6 meters high. It’s part of a larger complex, including the two-story El Palacio, one of the longest structures in the Puuc region.
