Gifted to Frankfurt in 1876 the Kaiserbrunnen wasn’t just a decorative addition. It symbolized the city’s ambition and prosperity. The creation of Kaiserplatz itself in 1872 was a bold undertaking. It connected the main train station and the Hauptwache two vital hubs of the city. The fountain therefore became a centerpiece of this newly established thoroughfare.
The design is a masterpiece. Created by the sculptor Johannes Dielmann and his architect son Richard the fountain boasts a large basin and a chalice-shaped pillar. Its striking bowl is carved from a single piece of Bohus granite. This journeyed all the way from the Swedish island of Malmön a fact that highlights the dedication and effort invested in its creation. The granite was hewn and polished in Stockholm before being shipped to Frankfurt by the entrepreneur Jonas Dörr senior.
Funding came from an unlikely source. The Kaiserbrunnen wasn’t built by the city itself. It was a gift from Raphael Baron von Erlanger. He was a local banker who also served as consul for Portugal Sweden and Norway. His unique position representing royal heads of state in Frankfurt speaks volumes about his prominence. The inscription reads DER VATERSTADT R FRH VON ERLANEN 1876 a clear indication of the benefactor’s identity and the year of its installation.
Interestingly early on the fountain had a reputation. The water originally came from the Main River. This resulted in a rather unpleasant smell particularly during hot summer months. The construction of the U-Bahn subway system required its temporary removal. When it was reinstalled in 1974 the city took the opportunity to upgrade. The water source was changed to clean city water solving the unpleasant odor problem for good.
