A beacon of hope. That’s what New Hope Baptist Church has been since its inception in 1916. Reverend John C. Cook, a visionary leader, established this church in the heart of Houston’s Ryon’s Addition. Imagine the scene. Reverend Cook opened his home at 1619 Griffin Street to his community. He started New Hope Freewill Missionary Baptist Church right in his living room. The community embraced his vision. Soon, the small living room church blossomed. It outgrew its humble beginnings. The congregation, fueled by faith and determination, built their first church at 5202 Chapman Street. This is where New Hope Baptist Church stands today. Reverend Cook’s vision extended beyond spiritual growth. He believed deeply in the power of education. The new church building also housed the first Black public school in Ryon’s Addition. James D. Ryan Elementary served the community for over seventy-four years. It later became a training facility for the Houston Independent School District. Reverend Cook’s influence was also felt beyond the church walls. He even petitioned for the first public utilities in the Ryon’s community. New Hope Baptist Church has seen a succession of devoted leaders. Reverend V. Coleman followed Reverend Cook, though details of his pastorate remain a mystery. In 1939, Reverend L. T. Jackson took the helm. He guided the church, nurturing its growth and strengthening its role as a beacon in the community. Then, in 1963, Reverend S.V. Adolph Sr. became pastor. Under his leadership, the church experienced significant growth. The old church building, weathered by time and storms, needed replacing. A new edifice was built and dedicated to God in 1978. This building, a testament to the church’s resilience and unwavering faith, is the one you see today. In 1988, Reverend Carlton O. Sylvester Sr. joined as Assistant Pastor. He faithfully served alongside Reverend Adolph until 2008. Following Reverend Adolph’s retirement, Reverend Sylvester became the new pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. His mission: to rebuild, restore, and lead souls to Christ. New Hope Baptist Church continues to serve its community, a symbol of hope and resilience since 1916. It has evolved from a small gathering in a living room to a cornerstone of the community. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the vision of Reverend John C. Cook.
