Picture this. A quaint church nestled in San Clemente. This is St Clement’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. Its history whispers of simpler times. It all began on September 1 1929. The Rt Rev R H Balcom held the first service. It wasn’t in this very building. The first service was held in the Las Palmas Elementary School. Imagine the scene. A small congregation gathered. They were eager for spiritual guidance. Their faith was the foundation for this church.

St Clement’s by-the-Sea wasn’t always a standalone church. Services moved around at first. They were held in a schoolhouse. Then in a Community Center. It wasn’t until October 19 1930 that St Clement’s was finally dedicated. Bishop W B Stevens led the ceremony. Two hundred people attended this momentous occasion. A truly significant milestone for this small community.

The church’s growth is a testament to the community’s faith. In 1957 a new parish hall was built. Before that the church library served as their gathering place. It wasn’t until 1961 that St Clement’s achieved parish status. This meant they were financially independent. That same year saw the completion of a new rectory. The rector’s home a symbol of their growing success.

In 1981 St Clement’s by-the-Sea received an honor. The San Clemente Historical Society designated the church building as Historical Landmark #1. A testament to the church’s enduring presence in the town. It’s a significant landmark. This original building stands unchanged. It speaks to the enduring faith of its founders. It also speaks to the unwavering commitment of the community.

Today St Clement’s by-the-Sea continues to serve its community. It offers regular services. It is a beacon of hope and faith. It’s more than just a building. It’s a symbol of enduring faith. It’s a place of community and spiritual growth. Step inside. Feel the history. Let your heart be touched by this special place. St Clement’s by-the-Sea. A church with a story worth remembering.
