The story of Hochzoll begins with a bridge over the Lech river in 980. As the Lech is the historical border between Upper Bavaria and Swabia, and as the construction of bridges was very expensive at the time, a bridge toll was raised – Hochzoll, meaning “high toll”. This bridge toll gave the area its name.

Hochzoll has been a bustling hub of activity for hundreds of years. The history of Hochzoll is intertwined with the Lech, a powerful force that has shaped the landscape and the lives of the people who have lived here.

As you stand here, imagine the scene in 1818, when Hochzoll was a small village of 24 estates. The village grew rapidly in the 19th century, becoming a major industrial center. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Hochzoll was a busy place with factories, businesses, and a growing population.

The story of the bridge continues, with the old Lech weir, called Hochablass, being destroyed by a flood in 1910 and rebuilt with reinforced concrete. And in 1913, Hochzoll, with a population of 2,000, became a district of Augsburg, officially joining the city that it had long been connected to.

Today, Hochzoll is a vibrant and diverse community. The river still flows through the heart of the district, but today it is a place for recreation and relaxation. The Kuhsee, a beautiful artificial lake, is a popular spot for swimming, sailing, and walking.

Take in the beauty of the surroundings as you stroll through the parks and neighborhoods of Hochzoll. Listen to the children playing, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, and enjoy the peace and quiet of the riverside park.

Hochzoll is a place with a rich history, a vibrant present, and a promising future.
