Journey back to 1877. Imagine Frankfurt recovering from the Reformation. St. Josefskirche rises, the first Catholic church built in Frankfurt in almost 300 years. It was a bold statement of faith in a city still grappling with religious upheaval. St. Josefskirche became a beacon for the growing Catholic community in Bornheim. The original structure, a neo-Gothic gem designed by Max Meckel, incorporated elements from Frankfurt’s past. Salvaged pieces of the former Johanniterkirche, including rib vaults and window tracery, found a new home within St. Josefskirche’s walls. The church, lovingly referred to by locals, grew. Meckel added extensions, affectionately nicknamed “Schwalbennester” (swallow’s nests). As the 20th century dawned, the congregation swelled, prompting the construction of Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche to accommodate the burgeoning population. In the 1930s, St. Josefskirche underwent a significant transformation. Architects Hans and Christoph Rummel expanded the building, creating the vaulted basilica we see today. A striking steel framework supports the modern structure, its tower proudly displaying a statue of St. Joseph by Arnold Hensler. Inside, the old and new sections of the church unite beneath a massive red sandstone arch. A carved angel, said to resemble the then-parish priest, Joseph Höhler, adorns the keystone. The original high altar, a gift from Frankfurt city pastor Ernst Franz August Münzenberger, stands as a testament to the church’s rich history. Look closely at the pillars. You’ll see wooden statues of the twelve apostles, each with its own unique story. Listen to the music. The organ, installed in 1966, boasts thousands of pipes and dozens of registers. The bells, recast in 1948, reportedly contain metal from the destroyed equestrian statue of Wilhelm I. St. Josefskirche stands as a testament to resilience and faith. It has weathered wars, renovations, and even a fire caused by burning oil lamps in 2007. Today, St. Josefskirche serves a diverse, international community. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living embodiment of Frankfurt’s vibrant history and the enduring power of faith.
