Why Бумажный? The name comes from a paper factory. It stood nearby in the 18th century. In those days, paper was called бумага.

The first bridge here appeared before 1795. It was a simple wooden structure. In 1823, engineers rebuilt it. They were A.A. Betankur, B.E. Klaiperon and P.P. Bazen. It became a single-span arch bridge made of wood. Its design was similar to that of the Kamennoostrovsky Bridge over the Malaya Nevka.

A flood in 1824 nearly swept the bridge away. It shifted about 1.8 meters. In 1862, they rebuilt it as a three-span wooden bridge. It had central supports and cantilevered spans. The bridge underwent repairs in 1868. More work followed in 1887 and 1898-1899. By 1903, it was 21.7 meters long and 22.75 meters wide.

Tram tracks were laid across the Бумажный мост. This required strengthening the central part of the bridge. Another repair occurred in 1928.

In 1949, the wooden spans were replaced with metal. This was based on a design by engineers A.D. Sapershtein and P.M. Blokhin. The current Бумажный мост dates back to 1962-1963. Engineer E.A. Boltunova and architect L.A. Noskov designed it. SU-2 of the Lenmostostroy trust built it. V.K. Kirillov was the chief engineer.

The bridge is a three-span. It is made of reinforced concrete. It uses a cantilevered system. The spans are prefabricated and made of prestressed concrete. The supports are reinforced concrete. They stand on pile foundations without casings. The Бумажный мост is 29.7 meters long. Its width is 19.3 meters.

It carries automobile and tram traffic and pedestrians. The roadway has two lanes for cars. It also features two tram tracks. The surface is asphalt concrete. Sidewalks are separated from the roadway. They have a parapet. The bridge has simple metal railings. Granite blocks top the supports.

The Бумажный мост stands as a testament. It shows how a city evolves. It links a humble factory to modern life. The bridge is a vital part of Saint Petersburg’s transport network. It connects people and places.
