In 2006, a unique structure arose amidst the vibrant Kelvin Grove Urban Village. This was the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, or IHBI. The Queensland Government, QUT, and Atlantic Philanthropies joined forces. Their combined efforts and funding brought this hub of medical research to life. The Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation wasn’t confined to a single location. While its main facility graced Kelvin Grove, its influence spread across QUT’s campuses, including Gardens Point. It also extended into collaborative research spaces like the Translational Research Institute. This institute, next to Princess Alexandra Hospital, and the Centre for Children’s Health Research near Queensland Children’s Hospital, also housed IHBI projects. Even the Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF) on the grounds of Prince Charles Hospital pulsed with IHBI’s research activities. Within the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, three key research themes dominated. These were health determinants and health systems, injury prevention and trauma management, and chronic disease and ageing. Think diabetes, mental health, arthritis, road safety, cancer, dementia. These were just some of the areas under the microscope at IHBI. Funding for these vital projects wasn’t solely from IHBI’s own coffers. Instead, a network of federal, state, and private grants fueled the research endeavors of individual teams. Sadly, the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation as an entity dissolved in 2020. QUT shifted its focus from the institute model to a research center approach. However, the legacy of IHBI lives on. QUT’s current health-related research centers, like the Centre for Biomedical Technologies and the Centre for Genomics and Personalised Health, carry the torch. They continue to explore the frontiers of health and biomedical innovation, inspired by the groundwork laid by IHBI.
