Did you know Cypress Plaque marks a place rich with history? The Cypress Plaque commemorates the area’s evolution. It’s a story of settlers, railroads, and community. Let’s step back in time.

The Cypress area’s story began long before the plaque. By 7500 BC humans were already here. Evidence was found at the Dimond Knoll site near Cypress Creek. Later the Atakapa and Akokisa Indian tribes lived here. But they disappeared after German settlers arrived in the 1840s.

These German roots still echo today. Look at road names like Huffmeister and Telge Roads. They remind us of the area’s heritage. General Sam Houston and his Texas Army even camped here in 1836. This was on their way to the Battle of San Jacinto.

Now, picture Cypress in the mid-1800s. Anglo settlers began arriving. The Burnett and Simmons families were among the first. Matthew Burnett established a tavern and inn. It was near the Cypress Creek crossing. He became the first Postmaster at Big Cypress by 1840.

German immigrants seeking land and religious freedom followed. Cypress transformed into a rural community. Farmers, dairymen, and ranchers thrived. Small schools educated the children. Cypress became a region of settlements. These included Big Cypress, Hamblin, and Cypress City.

Railroads played a vital role. A railroad was planned as early as 1839. In July 1856 the Galveston and Red River Railway reached Cypress Top depot. This depot was 26 miles northwest of Houston. Businesses flourished around the railroad. Stores, hotels, and saloons sprung up.

In the early 1900s something unique happened. A hot artesian well was discovered. This led to the Houston Hot Well Sanitarium and Hotel. Dance halls like Tin Hall and Juergen’s Hall became popular. Cypress became a destination.

But the area remained mostly rural until the 1990s. Developers then began building master-planned communities. The name Cy-Fair emerged. This came from when Big Cypress School and Fairbanks High School combined in the 1930s. They formed Cy-Fair Senior High School.

Today, the Cypress Historical Society keeps this history alive. It was formed in 2008. The society collects and preserves historical documents. It also promotes Cypress’s cultural foundation. They hold regular events for residents.

This Cypress Plaque stands in Cypress Top Historic Park. It marks a place where the past is cherished. The park itself was donated to Harris County. It was given by descendants of the Juergen family. Cypress Historical Society docents offer tours here. They share stories of the area’s past.

So as you stand here take a moment. Think about the people who shaped this community. The settlers, railroad workers, and business owners. The Cypress Plaque is more than just a marker. It is a symbol of Cypress’s rich and evolving history.
