Did you know that the formula on the Otto-Hahn-Denkmal represents one of science’s most important discoveries? This is the story of Otto Hahn and his legacy in Frankfurt.

The Otto-Hahn-Denkmal commemorates Otto Hahn. He was a Nobel Prize-winning chemist and an honorary citizen of Frankfurt. The memorial stands in Ziegelgasse. This is where Hahn’s birthplace was before it was destroyed in World War II. The Otto-Hahn-Denkmal was erected to honor him on the 10th anniversary of his death in 1978.

The Otto-Hahn-Denkmal features a bronze bust of Hahn. Two inscription panels are integrated into granite slabs. Knud Knudsen created the bust. One panel displays a significant formula: 92 Uran + Neutron = 56 Barium + 36 Krypton. This formula represents nuclear fission.

Otto Hahn and his assistant Fritz Straßmann made a groundbreaking discovery in December 1938. They found that atomic nuclei could be split by neutron bombardment. This process releases immense energy known as nuclear energy. A uranium nucleus with 92 charges splits into barium with 56 charges. It also splits into the radioactive isotope krypton with 36 charges. The presence of krypton, a measurable noble gas, confirmed nuclear fission.

Lise Meitner, a Jewish researcher who had fled to Sweden, and her nephew Otto Frisch helped explain the physics of nuclear fission. Hahn, Meitner, and Frisch published their findings in February 1939. Their discovery led to both nuclear power plants and atomic weapons.

Otto Hahn received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1944 for his discovery. However, he bore the heavy burden of its implications. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 horrified Hahn. He became a strong opponent of military uses of nuclear energy.

The city of Frankfurt feels a special connection to Otto Hahn. He was born in Frankfurt and was an honorary citizen. Every two years, the city, along with other scientific societies, awards the Otto Hahn Prize. The prize is worth 50000 Euro. It recognizes outstanding achievements in chemistry, physics, and applied engineering.

In recent years, the Otto-Hahn-Denkmal has been renovated. The granite slabs and bronze bust were cleaned. The bronze inscription panel was moved from the ground. It was placed beneath the bust for better protection. A new granite slab filled the empty space on the ground.

Standing before the Otto-Hahn-Denkmal, remember the importance of Hahn’s discovery. Reflect on its impact on science and society. The Otto-Hahn-Denkmal serves as a reminder of scientific progress. It also reminds us of the responsibility that comes with such knowledge.
