“A square named after a composer” someone mused. That’s Arnold-Schönberg-Platz in Berlin-Weissensee. This unassuming square holds a significant piece of Berlin’s musical history. It’s a tribute to the influential composer Arnold Schönberg who spent considerable time in Berlin.

Schönberg’s connection to Berlin spans three distinct periods. His first stay was from 1901 to 1903. He served as Kapellmeister at the Überbrettl cabaret. This was Berlin’s first literary cabaret. It was housed in a building designed by the renowned Art Nouveau architect August Endell. Sadly the building no longer exists. Today the Kraftwerk Mitte stands in its place. This former power plant now houses the legendary Tresor techno club. A stark contrast to Schönberg’s early days in Berlin.

During his second Berlin period 1911-1915 he lived in Zehlendorf. There he composed his seminal work Pierrot Lunaire. This atonal melodrama was a revolutionary piece for its time. Its premiere took place in the Choralion-Saal. This hall sadly no longer exists either.

His final period 1926-1933 was marked by his professorship at the Prussian Academy of Arts. He taught composition. He gave private lessons in his own home. He also taught a course titled “The Musical Idea Its Presentation and Execution” at the University of the Arts. This was a unique aspect of his time in Berlin. Teaching independently while still holding a prestigious professorship. He composed many of his major works during these years. Including his unfinished opera Moses und Aron. His Orchestervariationen also have strong Berlin roots.

Schönberg’s presence in Berlin was not without controversy. His atonal compositions were met with both enthusiasm and opposition. He faced antisemitism as well. This forced his eventual exile in 1933. He left Berlin for Paris. He later emigrated to the United States. He never returned to Germany.

Arnold-Schönberg-Platz though small is a poignant reminder. It serves to remember Schönberg’s lasting impact on music and Berlin’s rich cultural heritage. The square is a quiet testament to a great composer’s life. It offers a moment of reflection on his contributions to both music and history. Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. Remember the genius who once called this city home.
