Could this unassuming shelter be hiding a tale of revolution and generosity? This, my friends, is Posseltslust. This charming spot, nestled in the Heidelberg hills, isn’t just a pretty face. It holds a story as intriguing as its name. Posseltslust was a gift, willed to Heidelberg by Louis Posselt, a man of many passions: pharmacy, politics, and apparently, beautiful views.

The year was 1881. Louis Posselt, a Heidelberg local turned revolutionary, had just passed. He bequeathed a part of his fortune to build a “pleasure house” near the Kohlhof area. And so, Posseltslust was born – a whimsical blend of arched hall, terrace, and a 15-meter tower, all crafted from local sandstone.

Posselt, you see, was no ordinary pharmacist. He actively participated in the 1848 Baden Revolution. When the revolution failed, he fled to Mexico, only returning in 1862 after a general amnesty. He returned to his hometown, becoming a city council member and a Professor of Pharmacy, just like his father.

Today, while the original park with its pond and grotto is gone, the spirit of Posseltslust remains. The tower, often closed for safety, still offers a glimpse into the past. It whispers of a time when a pharmacist dared to dream of a revolution, and in his final act, gifted Heidelberg a place to pause and admire its beauty.
