Imagine, if you will, a former gravel pit transformed into a beloved urban oasis. That’s the Großer Spektesee.

This Spandau gem wasn’t always so serene. In the 1960s, this area was a hub of construction. Kies, or gravel, was mined here to fuel Berlin’s growth. By 1978, the mining stopped. In 1984 the Großer Spektesee was created.

The Spekte, a small stream, gives the lake its name. It once flowed through the Havelland wetlands. It eventually joined the Havel River near Spandau.

For years, the Großer Spektesee was just a body of water. It was a reminder of industrial activity. However, nature had other plans.

In 2003, a renaturation project began. It aimed to integrate the lake into a green corridor. Funds from Deutsche Bahn helped make this vision a reality.

Today, the Großer Spektesee spans seven hectares. It reaches a depth of almost 12 meters. Its shores mark Berlin’s lowest point. It sits 28.1 meters above sea level.

Initially, swimming was discouraged. Steep underwater slopes and debris posed risks. Old construction materials from street and subway projects lined the lakebed. Also, the lake is within Spandau’s waterworks catchment area.

Locals, however, had already discovered the lake’s charm. They used it as a recreational area. They especially loved the lawn on the northwest shore.

Recognizing this, the city took action. Studies confirmed the lake’s potential for safe use. From 2016 to 2017, a cleanup operation took place. Workers cleared construction debris from the swimming area. An underwater barrier was built. It would prevent landslides. New plants were added to improve water quality.

Now, the Großer Spektesee is an official swimming spot. A non-swimmer zone ensures safety.

The Großer Spektesee is more than just a lake. It is a testament to Berlin’s commitment to sustainability. It links Falkenhagener Feld to Park am Rathaus Spandau.

You might even catch some open-air techno music here. A unique Spandau experience.

So, as you stand here, remember the Großer Spektesee’s journey. From gravel pit to green paradise, it’s a true Berlin success story.
