The story of Saiwai-bashi Bridge begins long ago. Its name, meaning “Happiness Bridge,” hints at its role as a connector. It links not just places but people and their aspirations.
Originally, a wooden bridge served the purpose. In 1873, progress marched on and the wooden structure was replaced with an iron bridge. It was imported from Germany. Osakans found the arched design remarkable.
Then, in 1909, Osaka embraced modernity. A stone bridge replaced the iron one. It was an elegant, Western-style double-arched bridge. Its railings featured carved four-leaf clovers. The bridge sparkled at night, lit by eight gas lamps. Locals affectionately called it “Eyeglasses bridge.” The reflection of its arches in the water resembled spectacles.
But time brings change. In 1964, the Nagahori-gawa canal was reclaimed to create a road. The stone bridge was dismantled. Yet, its memory lived on. Parts of its railings and lamps were repurposed. They became part of a pedestrian overpass. The Saiwai-bashi Bridge even played a role in Hollywood. It appeared in a scene of the 1989 film “Black Rain.”
The overpass, too, eventually made way for progress. In 1997, the Crysta Nagahori underground shopping mall opened. The spirit of Saiwai-bashi Bridge was preserved. Relocated lamps and carved stone railings now grace a sidewalk bridge above the mall. Water flows beneath it.
The original German-made iron bridge was reconstructed in 1973. It is now a pedestrian overpass in Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park.
