“Caisson disease”—those words, whispered amongst the workers building the Brooklyn Bridge, sent shivers down their spines. Here we are, standing before this magnificent structure, the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s hard to imagine the immense challenges, even deadly ones, faced during its 14-year construction. Officially opened in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first fixed crossing of the East River, a vital link between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, or sometimes the East River Bridge, it wasn’t officially dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge until 1915. It was a daring feat of engineering, the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time, its main span stretching an impressive 1,595.5 feet. Designed by John A. Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge’s construction was a family affair, taken over by his son, Washington Roebling, after John’s tragic death. But the depths of the East River held unseen dangers. Working in the pressurized caissons, necessary to build the bridge’s massive towers, exposed workers to “caisson disease,” now known as decompression sickness. Washington Roebling himself was severely affected, becoming paralyzed and confined to his apartment. He watched the Brooklyn Bridge’s progress through a telescope, relaying instructions to his wife, Emily Warren Roebling. Emily became instrumental in the project, becoming a liaison between her husband and the engineers, mastering the complex calculations and engineering details herself. The Brooklyn Bridge was not just a feat of engineering; it was a symbol of human resilience and ingenuity, forged in hardship and loss. Beyond the “bends,” financial scandals plagued the project. A contractor, J. Lloyd Haigh, supplied inferior wire for the bridge’s cables, a deception discovered too late to fully rectify. Roebling, ever resourceful, compensated by adding more cables, ensuring the bridge’s stability, despite the compromised materials. Today, the Brooklyn Bridge stands as an iconic landmark, its neo-Gothic towers reaching skyward. The same towers that once housed pressurized chambers, now hold necklace lights, a string of LEDs illuminating this architectural marvel. As you walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, remember the human cost, the ingenuity, and the sheer determination that brought this magnificent structure to life. It’s a bridge between boroughs, yes, but also a bridge between the past and the present, a testament to the power of human endeavor.
