The Beethoven-Denkmal in Frankfurt is located in the Taunusanlage. It was created between 1926 and 1948. Georg Kolbe designed it. He got an offer from Berlin in 1926. The city wanted a design for a Beethoven monument. Kolbe declined due to time constraints. But he still began a design.
The design was finished in 1947. The monument was cast in Berlin in May 1948. It was inaugurated on June 16, 1951. Sadly, Kolbe passed away in 1947. So he could not witness its installation.
The Beethoven-Denkmal sits on a hill. It is in Frankfurt’s Anlagenring. The monument features three bronze figures. The central figure is Ludwig van Beethoven. But it is not a portrait. The two female figures are from Roman mythology. They flank Beethoven. They are called Sinnende and Rufende. The base is made of diabase. It bears the inscription “Dem Genius Beethovens”. This translates to “To the genius of Beethoven”.
