“This building wasn’t always shops” I whispered. My tour group leaned in intrigued. Before us stood the Palais Thurn und Taxis a reconstructed marvel in Frankfurt am Main.

The Palais Thurn und Taxis boasts a rich history. It began as an ambitious project. Prince Anselm Franz von Thurn und Taxis commissioned its construction from 1731 to 1739. The architect was Robert de Cotte. In 1748 it became the administrative center for the imperial post office. The Thurn und Taxis family ran the post.

For decades the Palais witnessed history unfold within its walls. From 1805 to 1813 it served as the residence of Prince Primate Karl Theodor von Dalberg. He was the Grand Duke of Frankfurt. The Bundestag of the German Confederation met here. That was from 1816 to 1866. Imagine the hushed whispers of important decisions made behind closed doors. The public was never allowed in. Meetings were chaired by the Austrian envoy. He lived in the palace during sessions.

Sadly World War II inflicted heavy damage. Much of the structure survived. Some ceiling paintings and stucco work remained intact. Reconstruction was deemed too expensive. So much of the building was demolished in 1951. Sections of the original building survived. They were incorporated into new constructions. These modern structures used reinforced concrete. The original mansard roofs were gone.

The Palais Thurn und Taxis we see today is a testament to resilience. It’s a reconstruction. From 2004 to 2010 it was rebuilt. It’s now part of the Palais Quartier development. The palace’s history lives on. It is a place of shops and memories. It quietly stands as a reminder of Frankfurt’s vibrant past. The Palais Thurn und Taxis. It continues to be a focal point. It silently narrates tales of power. It speaks of diplomacy and the echoes of war. It is a building steeped in history.
