Nestled within Osaka’s vibrant tapestry lies the Hondenen-ji Temple, a tranquil sanctuary steeped in history. Hondenen-ji, also known as Koden-ji, offers a glimpse into a past interwoven with resilience and rebirth. Originally established during the Bunroku era (1592-1596), Hondenen-ji was founded by Nisshin, the younger brother of Kyokyoin Niccho. He was the 16th head priest of the prominent Daihonzan Honmon-ji Temple. Over the centuries, Hondenen-ji has faced trials by fire, literally. Records show the main hall was rebuilt several times. It was reconstructed during the Genroku era (1688-1704) under the leadership of Nichi’i (3rd generation) and again in the Bunka era (1804-1818) during the time of Nichiju (13th generation). It was further rebuilt in the Tenpo era (1830-1844) by Nichi’do (16th generation). Each reconstruction followed devastating fires, a testament to the enduring spirit of Hondenen-ji. Tragedy struck again during World War II. In 1945, the Osaka air raid caused significant damage, leaving Hondenen-ji in ruins. The Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 dealt another blow, further testing the temple’s fortitude. Yet, Hondenen-ji persevered. Today, the temple stands as a symbol of hope. It provides solace amidst the bustling city. Within Hondenen-ji’s grounds lie the graves of prominent figures. These include the influential Goryo brothers. They held important positions within the Shinsengumi, a special police force in Kyoto during the late shogunate period. The temple also holds the grave of Misekiji Daikujo, a renowned figure in the esoteric Buddhist sect of Shingon Mikkyo. Hondenen-ji is easily accessible, located a short five-minute walk from Higashi-Umeda Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line. Stepping through its gates, visitors are enveloped in a sense of calm, a world apart from Osaka’s urban energy.
