The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints San Diego Stake Center is where the Del Cerro ward meets. The San Diego 18th YSA ward also gathers here. This stake center serves a vital role for these congregations.

But what exactly is a stake? It is an administrative unit composed of multiple congregations. The term “stake” comes from the Book of Isaiah. It speaks of strengthening stakes to enlarge and lengthen Zion. Hence the phrase “stake of Zion”.

The first stake was in Kirtland Ohio in 1834. Joseph Smith himself was the president. Today stakes are essential to the church’s organization. New stakes form when congregations grow. They also need enough Melchizedek priesthood holders to lead. A stake must have at least five wards to be created. It can include up to sixteen congregations.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints San Diego Stake Center plays a vital role. It is the site for stake conferences stake meetings and stake activities. Stake offices are also housed here. This allows for efficient administration.

A stake conference happens twice a year. The stake president presides unless a general authority attends. The conferences involve stake business and guidance from the stake presidency. Speakers include the stake presidency and other members.

The stake center is usually the largest meetinghouse in the stake. However location is also important. The center should be central to the stake’s boundaries.
