Have you ever stumbled upon a church so charming, even with its imperfections, that it steals a piece of your heart? Beth Eden Baptist Church, tucked away near Whitefield Square, is just that kind of place. Beth Eden Baptist Church isn’t the grandest church in Savannah. Its neo-Gothic architecture, designed by Berlin-born Henry Urban in 1893, might even appear modest compared to some of Savannah’s architectural giants. Yet, there’s a certain magic to this house of worship. The church’s story is intertwined with that of Savannah’s oldest Black church, the First African Baptist Church. Beth Eden was formed in 1889 by a group that branched off from Second African Baptist, another descendant of First African. This makes Beth Eden part of a rich lineage of faith and resilience. The church building itself is a testament to innovative design. Urban, also known for his work on Christ Church and other Savannah landmarks, managed to create a monumental feeling within a relatively small space. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by original stained-glass windows, combination gas/electric light fixtures, and a vibrant frieze depicting the Last Supper above the choir loft. Look closely, and you might see the work of noted Black folk artist William Pleasant, a rare treat in Savannah. Today, Beth Eden Baptist Church thrives under the leadership of Pastor Samantha Stewart Sunkins. Interestingly, Pastor Sunkins grew up in this very church, returning after thirty years to guide her historic flock. Beth Eden’s mission is “Loving Nations to Life,” a testament to its commitment to community and spiritual growth. Even with its crumbling roof and signs of age, Beth Eden Baptist Church possesses a unique charm. It’s a place where history whispers through the stained glass and the spirit of community thrives.
