Built over 1400 years ago Hoanji Temple stands before you. It’s a testament to time a silent observer of Osaka’s vibrant history.

Emperor Jomei reigned during its construction. That was between 593 and 628 AD. Originally called Shinzan it was renamed Hoanji. This was due to the Buddhist sect it belonged to. The temple’s location on a hill contributed to its early name.

Hoanji Temple was once a significant Shinto shrine. It became a Buddhist temple later. It moved to its present location in the city’s central ward. This was after a relocation during the Heian period. The move involved acquiring land for the temple. Osaka’s rulers of the time invested heavily in its development.

Sadly Hoanji Temple suffered greatly. A major air raid in March 1945 reduced much of it to ashes. Miraculously however the main hall and the bell tower survived. They stand as resilient symbols of hope today. They were rebuilt after the devastation.

Today Hoanji Temple welcomes visitors free of charge. It’s easily accessible from the Osaka Metro. Just a five-minute walk from the Daikokucho Station. The temple opens from 10 am to 4 pm daily.

Remember Hoanji Temple’s enduring legacy. It’s a powerful story of resilience and faith. A story etched into the very stones of this peaceful sanctuary. A silent witness to the ebb and flow of Osaka’s history. It’s a must-see on any tour of this fascinating city.
