“Looking for deep tracks off rock albums?” That’s what KACC-FM 89.7 offers listeners in the Greater Houston area. This album-oriented rock station broadcasts from Alvin, Texas. It is owned by Alvin Community College.

KACC began as a volunteer station. It became part of the Radio-Television curriculum at Alvin Community College. Cathy Forsythe was a founder and made KACC a Brazoria County staple. She passed away in 2007.

Mark Moss managed the station for 28 years. He stepped down in 2020. The station manager position is currently vacant.

KACC plays current, classic, and local rock and roll. It supports local artists by playing different types of music. The station sometimes airs local high school sports. The KACC studios are near Alvin Community College. Plans exist to move the station to a smaller facility on campus.

The station’s programming is a welcome bright spot. It fills a niche in Houston’s terrestrial radio landscape. With only 5,600 watts of power, KACC is staffed by students. The station plays an eclectic mix of rock ‘n’ roll. This gives listeners nostalgic for FM radio a reason to stay tuned.

KACC doesn’t play Top 40 hits or pop. Instead, it offers deep cuts from rock albums from the 1960s to the present. As former station manager Mark Moss said, “We’ll play some Hendrix, but it’s not going to be Purple Haze.” He added, “We’ll get very deep in the library – ‘If 6 Was 9,’ ‘Castles Made Of Sand.’ We’ll play Lynyrd Skynyrd, but it’s ‘The Ballad of Curtis Loew.’ It’s not going to be ‘Free Bird.’”

KACC can take risks and stretch its format. It does not need to chase advertising revenue like other stations. The station is funded by the college.

KACC provides hands-on training for students. Students gain experience at KACC-FM. They also produce programming for KACC-TV. The station offers internships in commercial television facilities and production companies.

Whether you want to work behind the scenes or be on the air, KACC prepares you. Tune into KACC and discover your new favorite deep track.
