In 1787, Danesmoate House stood proudly as the residence of William Southwell, an influential figure in Irish politics and military. But the story of Danesmoate House begins much earlier, in the 18th century, when the Southwell family first built this grand Georgian mansion. Originally known as Glensouthwell or Glen Southwell, Danesmoate House has seen a fascinating procession of residents through its history. Following the Southwells, the Ponsonby family occupied the house until 1896. Later, it became the home of Professor Stanley Lane-Poole, a renowned scholar of Oriental art and numismatics. Lieutenant Algernon Gainsford, of the Seaforth Highlanders, then called Danesmoate House home for many years, until 1946. Perhaps the most famous chapter in Danesmoate House’s history began in 1986. The iconic rock band U2 chose this tranquil setting to record a significant portion of their album “The Joshua Tree”. The house’s lofty drawing room, with its unique acoustics, provided the perfect backdrop for their creative process. Years later, U2 bassist Adam Clayton purchased Danesmoate House. He even added a small watchtower, inspired by the nearby Cruagh Tower. But Danesmoate House is more than just a grand mansion. Within its grounds lies a mysterious ancient monument known as the Brehon’s Chair. This structure, composed of three towering stone slabs, is believed to be the remnants of a dolmen tomb. The missing stones likely formed part of the tomb’s chamber, leaving behind a haunting reminder of its past. The grounds also feature picturesque walks, soothing cascades, and occasional sightings of vibrant red-breasted pheasants. A crumbling tower stands beside the Little Dargle River, which flows through the property. This fragile structure, possibly built in the 18th century to enhance the view of Dublin Bay, offers a glimpse into a bygone era. Nearby, an octagonal building, rumored to have once been an ice house, adds another layer of intrigue to the Danesmoate estate.
