Consider this: A place where students from ninety countries converge annually. This is Rothberg C, part of the Rothberg International School. It stands as a testament to global education within The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The Rothberg International School started with a vision. Samuel Rothberg, an influential American businessman, wanted to foster international connections. He helped develop The Hebrew University. In 1955, his idea took shape with just twenty-one students from the United States.

The school’s growth reflects historical events. After the Six Day War in 1967, more overseas students arrived. American students especially sought a study abroad experience. Several international programs merged. The School for Overseas Students formed in 1971. Rothberg C was the first academic unit to move to Mount Scopus. In 1981, it was renamed The Rothberg School for Overseas Students.

Rothberg C offers diverse academic programs today. Undergraduate studies are available for those pursuing degrees outside Israel. Programs span dance, art, design, and even internships in technology. A unique program was also developed with Harvard University.

Graduate studies include Jewish studies and Middle Eastern studies. Students can explore non-profit management too. They may join non-degree programs. This allows them to choose from various graduate-level courses.

The Mechina program prepares overseas students for Israeli degrees. It assists new immigrants or those becoming citizens. Historically, the Mechina program reflected immigration trends. During Operations Moses and Solomon, many Ethiopian Jewish students enrolled. The post-Soviet aliyah in the 1990s brought many students from the Former Soviet Union.

Many notable individuals have passed through Rothberg C. Journalist Wolf Blitzer and novelist Nathan Englander studied here. US Ambassadors Martin Indyk, Daniel Kurtzer and Daniel Shapiro, along with actress Natalie Portman and historian Efraim Zuroff, are also alumni.

Samuel Rothberg’s dedication drove the school’s creation. He believed Hebrew University should nurture students from all backgrounds. It should encourage academic exchange and world-class research. Rothberg chaired the Board of Governors from 1968 to 1981. He helped return the university to Mount Scopus. He also established important research centers.

The Rothberg family continues his legacy. His daughter, Heidi Rothberg, serves as a governor. She is a co-chairperson of the International Board of Overseers at RIS. Kathy Rothberg Barnett is also a member of Hebrew University’s Board of Governors.

Rothberg International School embodies academic excellence. It attracts students worldwide. It remains a vibrant center for international education in Jerusalem. The Rothberg legacy lives on through its students and programs.
