Lost in reverie, think of splashing water and rustling leaves. It’s spring in Lichtenwalde Castle and Park. This enchanting Baroque ensemble is near Chemnitz. It’s a treasure of Saxony.

Lichtenwalde Castle boasts a rich history. It stands where a medieval fortress once stood. Around 1230, the Margraves of Meissen built a castle here. It guarded their territory against neighboring lords. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands. Families like the von Harras and von Bünau lived here.

In 1719, Jakob Heinrich Graf von Flemming bought the estate. Later, Christoph Heinrich Graf von Watzdorf acquired it in 1722. Watzdorf transformed the old fortress. He replaced it with the grand Baroque Schloss Lichtenwalde we see today.

His son, Friedrich Carl Graf von Watzdorf, created the extensive park around 1730. The park’s design broke from tradition. Instead of a direct axis to the castle, the gardens were south of the entrance. Kitchen gardens and an orangery were built to the north. An elaborate water system powered the famous water features.

The Vitzthum von Eckstädts acquired Lichtenwalde in 1764. They further enhanced the gardens. They added intimate hedge gardens and winding paths. Terraces, sculptures, and stunning views of the Zschopau valley completed the design.

A major fire damaged the castle in 1905. Friedrich Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt had it rebuilt by 1908. The restoration kept the original style but included eclectic changes.

The Red Army seized Schloss Lichtenwalde in 1945. Sibylle Gräfin Vitzthum von Eckstädt was forced to leave. The castle was looted. Valuable furnishings disappeared.

The state took over the castle in 1948. It served as a spa and then a health facility. In 1990, the Free State of Saxony took ownership. After a period of vacancy, citizens campaigned to save it.

In 1999, the Augustusburg/Scharfenstein/Lichtenwalde gGmbH took over management. The castle became a museum. It was extensively renovated. The museum opened in 2010.

Today, Schloss Lichtenwalde features several museum areas. These exhibits explore the castle’s history. They also showcase silhouette art. Discover art and culture from West Africa, East Asia, and the Himalayas. The staterooms display paintings and historical furniture. Asian porcelains fill the rooms.

The castle chapel has parts dating back to the 15th century. It was fully restored and rededicated in 2008. The Donati organ from 1741 was also restored. It returned to its place in the chapel in 2009.

The Lichtenwalde Castle park has evolved over centuries. It began as a Baroque garden. Later, it was expanded in the Rococo style. The park offers diverse experiences. It is known for its water features. Today, 335 spring jets create a stunning display. The “Seven Arts” fountain is the park’s largest.
