“A temporary hospital in a temple?” someone whispered. “Imagine that!”. We are standing before the esteemed Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Hanazono Campus. It started humbly as a temporary hospital on the grounds of Shoren-in Temple. Over time, this institution blossomed alongside Japan’s journey into modernization. The hospital moved, expanded and eventually in 1921, it was officially designated as Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine.
