Lost amidst the urban sprawl of Glasgow, Craigton Cemetery whispers tales of lives lived and lost. Craigton Cemetery isn’t just a place of rest. It’s a living archive, etched with the stories of Glasgow’s past. Established in 1871 by the Craigton Cemetery Company, Craigton Cemetery was designed as a “first-class garden cemetery.” It was meant to serve the wealthier residents of Govan and Partick. The cemetery’s first resident, seven-year-old Isabella Guthrie, was laid to rest here on June 9, 1873. Over time, Craigton Cemetery became the final resting place for over 150,000 souls. Among them are notable figures like Sir John Anthony, a former Provost of Govan, and football figures connected to Rangers F.C. like Joseph Buchanan and the club’s co-founders, the McNeil brothers. The cemetery’s connection to Rangers F.C. is a strong one, partly due to the proximity of Ibrox Stadium. Craigton Cemetery also holds a somber reminder of tragedies, including a memorial for the victims of the 1902 Ibrox disaster and the victims of the sinking of the SS Daphne in 1883. Craigton Cemetery isn’t simply rows of headstones. It’s a place where the echoes of Glasgow’s history resonate, whispering stories of triumphs, tragedies, and everything in between. The cemetery even houses a Jewish section, known as the “Bet Chaim” (House of Life), used until 1908. The northern half, dominated by the 1957 Craigton Crematorium, feels open and modern. In stark contrast, the southern half slopes steeply, densely populated with older, more elaborate monuments. Sadly, like many historic sites, Craigton Cemetery has faced its share of vandalism. Despite this, it remains a powerful testament to the lives that shaped Glasgow.
