Imagine, if you will, a neighborhood in Seoul that encapsulates six decades of rapid transformation. That place is Jangwi-dong. This district in Seongbuk-gu offers more than just a glimpse into modern Korean life. It reveals a panorama of urban evolution.

Jangwi-dong’s story is one of constant change. Before 1950, it was a quiet rural village. Life here strictly adhered to Jangwi. Jangwi was their common rule established in 1905. The Korean War changed everything.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, large-scale housing projects arose. The Korean Housing Administration spearheaded these developments. Restoring Housing, Revival Housing and National Housing emerged in sequence. Simultaneously, Dongbang Life Insurance developed the Dongbang Housing Complex. This area became a wealthy enclave for high-ranking military officials and celebrities.

However, Jangwi-dong’s elite didn’t stay forever. The rise of Gangnam in the 1970s lured them away. Grand houses were replaced by multi-family dwellings. Urban development largely bypassed Jangwi-dong from the 1980s onward. Low-rise, densely populated residential buildings became the norm.

The past decade has brought another wave of change. New town developments and urban regeneration projects are reshaping Jangwi-dong once more. These projects are intricately linked to Seoul’s broader urban plans.

Today, Jangwi-dong stands as a testament to Seoul’s ever-changing urban landscape. The Seoul Museum of History documented these transformations in a report called “Jangwi-dong, Panorama of Change in Urban Housing”. It’s a detailed look at the social and spatial shifts driven by urbanization.
