From a “New Royal Gymnasium” to an homage to a Renaissance master, the Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium has quite the story to tell. The Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium stands before you, a testament to Regensburg’s rich history and dedication to education. Established in 1880 as the “Neues Gymnasium,” it sought to distinguish itself from the older, Catholic-leaning “Altes Gymnasium.” The Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium quickly outgrew its initial home in the Thon-Dittmer-Palais. The city, under the guidance of Mayor Oskar von Stobäus, decided to build a new school building. They chose a plot on Minoritenweg, a site rich with history. This area, once home to the city walls and later a “Pestinhof” for the ill and impoverished, now offered ample space for the growing school. The new building for Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium, designed by city architect Adolf Schmetzer, incorporated remnants of the old city walls and a “Zwingermauertürmchen” (a small tower of the city’s outer wall). This blend of old and new reflects the very essence of Regensburg. In 1962, the school was renamed to honor the famed German painter and architect Albrecht Altdorfer. The Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a vibrant learning center offering diverse educational paths. Students can choose from humanities (with Latin and Greek), languages (with French), or a science and technology focus. Beyond academics, the Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium fosters a rich extracurricular life. It’s known as a “theater school,” with regular trips to the Theater Regensburg. The school also boasts a unique marionette theater, the “Spectraculum,” where students craft their own puppets and performances. For those with a penchant for archery, the school’s location near the Königliche Villa provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor practice. And from language courses to science clubs, there’s something to ignite every passion. The Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium prides itself on its close-knit community. It emphasizes social learning and values projects, fostering a sense of responsibility and belonging among its students. So, as you stand before the Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium, you’re not just looking at a school. You’re witnessing a blend of history, architecture, and a commitment to nurturing young minds.
