Let’s delve into the story of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church. Its roots are deeply connected to the Holy Trinity Parish. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Holy Trinity Parish saw incredible growth. By 1965, many felt a new church complex was needed to solve the Sunday School issue.
However, there was a concern. Some worried a new church would divide the parish. Despite the concern, a decision was made. On April 24, 1966, the community voted to purchase property. The location was 5335 Highland Drive. The goal was to plan, design and build another church.
A New Building Committee took on this important task. The understanding was unanimous. The new church and Holy Trinity would be under a single Parish Council. This ensured a united community. By December 1969, the Prophet Elias Church complex was ready. The first liturgy was held on December 21, 1969.
In 1996-1998, the Prophet Elias Church complex expanded. A large Multi-Purpose center was built at a cost of $2.2 million. This new center included a basketball court. It also had Sunday School classrooms and a full kitchen. A large educational wing was added. This was for the newly established Saint Sophia Hellenic Orthodox School.
Visiting Archbishop of America Iakovos elevated Holy Trinity. In April 1968, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church became a Cathedral.
In July 2021, Archbishop Elpidophoros visited Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church. The children of the parish’s St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox School welcomed him warmly. They presented a program of songs for the Archbishop.
