Marvel at Canarsie Park a sprawling 132-acre green space. This isn’t just any park. It’s a place steeped in history. It holds echoes of the Canarsie Indians who once called this land home. Their name lives on in this very neighborhood. The Lenape word for “fenced area” or perhaps “fort” describes the land’s original purpose.

Canarsie Park wasn’t always a park. It had humble beginnings. It started as a small plot. The city acquired it in 1895 and 1896. The Jans Martense Schenck house stood on the land. Brooklyn’s Parks Commissioner Frank Squier vowed to preserve it. He thought it would be a park attraction forever. Yet fifty-seven years later the house was carefully dismantled. It was moved to the Brooklyn Museum. Today it’s a living testament to Canarsie’s early settlers.

Canarsie Park didn’t stop growing. The park expanded. Land from the Department of Docks was added in 1934. More land followed in 1938 and 1949. Even Robert Moses played a role. He added land used for temporary World War II veteran housing. A final parcel was added near Fresh Creek Basin in 1958. Much of the parkland was eventually transferred to the National Park Service. Today it is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

Explore Canarsie Park today. Discover its many features. There are playgrounds basketball and tennis courts. Baseball diamonds and a skate park offer endless fun. Nature trails invite peaceful strolls. Runners and walkers enjoy its miles of well-marked paths. Canarsie Park’s transformation from humble beginnings to a thriving regional park is a testament to its enduring spirit. It’s a place where history and recreation seamlessly blend. A legacy continues to thrive in Canarsie Park.
