From its hexagonal tower, the Venice Lifeguard Station watches over the beach. This isn’t just any building. It’s a Mid-Century Modern masterpiece, completed in 1969. The Venice Lifeguard Station became the headquarters for the Los Angeles City Lifeguards. They operated from this very spot until 1975. Then, the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Service took over, using the Venice Lifeguard Station as their headquarters until 2016. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. The lifeguards stationed here have saved thousands of lives. They’ve shaped the beach culture that defines Venice and Southern California. The station’s unique design reflects a specific moment in architectural history. The firm Prescott, Whalley, and Weit designed the building. Its bold, geometric hexagonal tower is a testament to Mid-Century Modernism. The exposed eaves and rafters, steel windows, and wraparound deck all speak to its distinctive style. The Venice Lifeguard Station isn’t just a building. It’s a symbol of safety, leisure, and the unique spirit of Venice Beach. This landmark almost met its demise. The County proposed demolishing the top two floors. Thankfully, an outpouring of public support helped save it. The Los Angeles Conservancy and the Venice Neighborhood Council worked together. They submitted a Historic-Cultural Monument application, ensuring the Venice Lifeguard Station remains a part of Venice’s vibrant landscape.
